PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
Nocturne Op. 19 No 4
MARTIN SMOLKA
So Far, So Sad
DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH
Sonata in D minor Op. 40
Terezie FIALOVÁ | piano
Jiří BÁRTA | cello
We’ll start tonight’s concert gently, as befits a team play of life partners. Tchaikovsky himself arranged his piano-piece Nocturne from Six Pieces into a version for cello. It sounds as if, besides his beloved piano, the composer already had in mind the nostalgic tone of Jiří Bárta’s cello. Our leading cellist was witness to the birth of the composition So Far, So Sad by Martin Smolka. Here we are dealing with a perfect minimalist piece. For a long time, both instruments merely suggest their emotions, in order to eventually bewitch the listeners with their power. Following that, the audience will remain bewitched while listening to Shostakovich’s Sonata. Its technical challenges work in the opposite way to the previous composition, they literally overwhelm with sound. Romantic and sparkling.
