Composing the Stabat Mater can be considered the high point of a lifetime achievement for any composer. For Antonín Dvořák it was no different, although the circumstances in his case were accompanied by deep personal grief. This magnificent work is deservedly regarded as one of the most powerful orchestral compositions - it receives a similar response in this country and around the world as the great works of the masters Handel, Haydn and Beethoven. This deeply emotional oratorio about the grieving Virgin Mary, adorned with colourful instrumentation and exceptional work with voices, is performed every year at Easter time, this time under the direction of chief conductor Tomáš Brauner.
