The performance of any of Mahler's symphonies is always a great event. This is especially true for the Second Symphony "Resurrection" with its high demands on performance due to the number of musicians, the participation of the choir and soloists. Mahler made no secret of his inspiration from Beethoven's Ninth, and from the beginning he intended to use a choir. In the end, however, he went further and conceived his deeply philosophical work more as a symphonic cantata of five movements, including a fourth movement with an alto solo and a finale with choir and vocal solos.
