The Café Zimmermann was not famous for its excellent coffee or delicious desserts, although they were most probably served there. It achieved its renown as a unique place where those who loved listening to beautiful music would meet in harmonious surroundings and listen to Collegia Musica led by George Philipp Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach. Gottfried Zimmermann did not pay the artists and he was not paid by those who listened; the cost of the whole enterprise was covered by the consumers. That may be the reason why, as is nowadays alleged, some of Bach’s creations lasted well over two hours. Twenty years ago, this beating heart of Leipzig’s cultural life inspired a team of French Baroque enthusiasts to form an ensemble of the same name. Two of them come from Prague and they will bring us a selection of delicacies!
